Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have announced that the university’s Central Student Union (JnUSC) election will be held on November 27, following students’ protests and a hunger strike demanding the polls.
The decision was confirmed on Wednesday (September 17) through a notice signed by Acting Registrar Professor Dr Sheikh Md Gias Uddin.
As per the roadmap, the election commission will be formed on October 8, and the polls will be completed within 48 days. The process will depend on approval of the commission and the election guidelines.
Key steps include: drafting rules and code of conduct (Day 2–10), announcing the election schedule (Day 11), publishing the voter list (Day 19), finalizing nominations (Day 40), campaigning (Day 46), and polling with results on Day 48.
The announcement came a day after leaders of the Jagannath University Student Rights Council and Bangladesh Democratic Student Union launched a hunger strike. After 27 hours of fasting, two fell ill and required medical support. Several student and socio-cultural organisations, including Chhatra Dal, Shibir, and Up Bangladesh, expressed solidarity.
Students’ major demands include timely implementation of supplementary scholarships, immediate publication of the JnUSC election roadmap and subsidized hygienic meals at the cafeteria and modernization of the central library.
