Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Nahid Islam emphasized the necessity of a merit-based and professional bureaucracy, stating that the younger generation aspires to establish a system free from political influence.
Speaking at the 77th basic training program for BCS cadre officials at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre in Savar, Nahid highlighted past instances where bureaucracy in Bangladesh had been manipulated for political purposes.
He pointed out that politically motivated promotions within government services have hindered efficiency and fairness, calling for an end to this practice.
The institutionalization of bureaucracy is essential to ensure its independence and efficiency, Nahid remarked. He stressed that promotions within the public service should be based strictly on merit, urging reforms in the performance appraisal system for government officials and employees.
Addressing the broader context of state reforms, the adviser stated that the government is committed to laying a strong foundation for change. To achieve this, various reform commissions have been established to evaluate necessary measures, he said. He further noted that these reforms would be shaped through discussions with political parties and recommendations from the commissions.
Recalling the July-August Mass Uprising, Nahid commended the role of students in leading the movement against authoritarianism. The people placed their trust in students, who took to the streets to demand justice and democracy, he said.
He urged newly appointed officials to dedicate themselves to building a Bangladesh free from all forms of discrimination. Your sincerity and commitment will determine the future of our nation, he added.
The event was attended by the Rector of the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, Sayeed Mahbub Khan, along with other officials and dignitaries.
