Hasina faces genocide, crimes against humanity charges

A case of genocide and crimes against humanity was filed against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday over killing people during the recent mass uprising that led to her fall.
Father of a student killed during the movement lodged an appeal with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday to accept their complaint.
Relatives of another student who was killed during the movement seeking reformation of the quota system in government jobs and the resignation of the former prime minister filed a separate murder case against Sheikh Hasina.

In addition to that, an abduction case was filed against her and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
With the three cases filed on Wednesday, a total of four cases were filed against Sheikh Hasina since she resigned and fled on 5 August in the face of mass protest.
The case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and eight others on charges of committing crimes against humanity and of genocide was filed with the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal.

Md Bulbul Kabir, father of Arif Ahmed Siam who was killed in the mass uprising, made an application with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
The complaint was filed to the Coordinator of the ICT’s investigation agency and another application was submitted to register the complaint for taking investigative action against the accused under Section 8 of the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973.

Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tamim made the application on Wednesday on behalf of the father of the deceased student who was killed by the police during the anti-discrimination student movement in Savar on 5 August. He said those who were killed or injured from 15 July to 5 August across Bangladesh, and later died on different dates will be covered under this case.

Fallen Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, former Road, Transport and Bridges Minister and AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former Information State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat including some ministers of the ousted government, State Ministers and Members of Parliament, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Additional Inspector General of Police and Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Chief Harun-ar Rashid, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman were accused of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Apart from that, some other police officers and members, leaders and workers of Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League and AL’s other affiliated organisations along with some RAB officers and members were also accused in the complaint.

In addition to the accounts of the plaintiff and other witnesses, reports published in various media from 16 July to 6 August were attached with necessary documents and further proceedings will be conducted after the probe report is submitted to the Chief Prosecutor of the tribunal, he also said.

Murder case filed against Hasina over killing Dhaka Model Degree College student Faizul
Md Rajib, brother of Dhaka Model Degree College student Faizul Islam Rajon, lodged a case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate over the killing of his brother.
In the case former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others were accused.

Rajib lodged the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir on Wednesday, said Supreme Court lawyer Tajul Islam.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former law minister Anisul Huq, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harun-Or-Rashid, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar were made accused in the case.

After recording the statement of the complainant, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir directed the officer-in-charge of Kafrul police station to register it as a First Information Report (FIR).

According to the brother of the victim, Faizul Islam Rajon, (18) was shot dead by law enforcers on 19 July while protesting under the banner of Anti-Discrimination Students Movement in Kafrul area of Dhaka.
Lawyer files abduction case against former PM

A case has been filed against 30 people including Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan and some members of law enforcement agencies on charge of abducting a lawyer from Uttara around nine years back.

Supreme Court lawyer Sohel Rana, a victim of enforced disappearance, lodged the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury.
Taking the allegations into cognizance, the court ordered Uttara West police station to record it.

The other named accused included former law minister Anisul Huq, who was arrested from Dhaka’s Sadrghat on Tuesday afternoon, former IGP Shahidul Haque and former Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) director general Benazir Ahmed. Some unnamed RAB personnel were also accused in the case.
Lawyer Sohel Rana said, “On 10 February 2015, I was detained from Sector 5 in Uttara and forced to get on a vehicle. As soon as I was inside the car, I was nearly made unconscious by electric shocks to my ears and genitals.”

He also said, “After enduring various forms of brutal torture over time, I was eventually released in August in Godagari, Rajshahi.”
Earlier on Tuesday, one SM Ameer Hamza filed a murder case against seven people including Sheikh Hasina with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court.
