Habiganj Free Day observed amid festivity

Habiganj Free Day was observed amid festivity and enthusiasm here today.

On this day in 1971, the valiant freedom fighters liberated Habiganj by defeating Pakistani occupation forces.

On the occasion of the historic day, the district administration and the district Muktijoddha Sangsad unit command organized a day-long programme in the district.

Marking the day, a colorful rally was brought out from the Shirishtala in front of Jalal Stadium in the city which paraded the important streets and ended after placing a wreath at the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman this morning.

After the rally, a discussion meeting was held on the occasion at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner Office.

District Awami League president Advocate Md Abu Zahir, MP, of Habiganj-3 constituency addressed the function as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ishrat Jahan in the chair.

District Awami League General Secretary Advocate Alamgir Chowdhury, freedom fighters Abdus Shahid and Abdur Rahim Jewel, among others, spoke at the function.

Freedom fighter and retired Lance Naik Abdus Shahid said, “Under my leadership, a platoon of Sector No. 3 came near Habiganj city on December 2. On December 5, 1971 Habiganj city was besieged. Then Pak army ran away. In the morning of 6th December, we entered the city and hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at the police station. People welcomed us with Joy Bangla slogans and Habiganj was liberated on December 6, 1971.”
