The Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Prof Dr. Asif Nazrul has affirmed that the government will continue providing legal aid services independently, emphasizing efficient use of resources to save litigants’ time, effort, and money.

Speaking at the “National Conference on ADR: Role of District Legal Aid Committees in Implementing New Legislations” held at a Dhaka hotel on Monday, Prof Nazrul stressed that the initiative will not rely on external grants.

“Even without a single penny from grants, we will continue legal aid services throughout our tenure. We aim to create systems that will benefit people even after our term ends,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of accessibility, he noted that proper use of resources and infrastructural support can greatly enhance the effectiveness of legal aid.

“If we make legal aid easily available, imagine how many disputes can be resolved quickly and at minimal cost,” he remarked.

Prof Nazrul pointed out that 90 percent of legal aid recipients have expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their cases, which are typically resolved in a fraction of the time it would take in regular courts. He also proposed exploring mandatory legal aid to further expand its reach.

The adviser pledged that by December 2026, the government plans to serve 200,000 cases per month through legal aid programs across the country.

The event featured remarks from Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, European Union Ambassador Michael Miller, and UNDP Resident Representative Stefan Liller. Syed Azad Subhani, Executive Director of the National Legal Aid Services Organization, presented the keynote paper, while Law and Justice Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher delivered the closing speech.
