Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul has expressed strong confidence that justice for the killing of Abu Sayeed will be served during the tenure of the interim government.

“We are committed to ensuring a trial that will be deemed fair and acceptable by the international community,” he said on Wednesday while speaking at a discussion event marking the martyrdom anniversary of Abu Sayeed and ‘July Martyrs’ Day’ at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur.

Recalling past delays in high-profile justice, Dr. Nazrul said, “Sheikh Hasina often spoke of her father’s death, but even then, it took three and a half years to bring the killers to justice. Unlike the previous regime, we are not here to delay justice. We are optimistic that the trial of Abu Sayeed’s killers will be completed within the current interim administration.”

He shared a personal reflection on the incident, saying, “I didn’t see Abu Sayeed’s death on the 16th, but I saw it the next day, on the afternoon of July 17. As a guardian, I couldn’t sit still after witnessing the way he died. It struck me that we no longer have the right to remain afraid.”

“Abu Sayeed stood for truth and justice. He was prepared to sacrifice his life. Many people have died in democratic movements, but no one died the way he did. His sacrifice inspired hundreds of young people to stand up and resist. The legal process to bring his killers to justice is progressing steadily.”

Dr. Nazrul also highlighted the government’s focus on equitable development across the country. “Though Rangpur has long been neglected, its people remain honest and humble. Balanced development across all regions is a constitutional right, and this government is working toward that goal,” he said.

He also revealed that the Chief Adviser has plans to establish a modern ‘health city’ around a specialized hospital in Nilphamari, aiming to offer world-class healthcare services within the region. “People should go to Rangpur for treatment, not Singapore,” he added.

The event was held at the university’s Shaheed Minar grounds. Abu Sayeed’s father, Mokbul Hossain, attended as the chief guest.

The discussion was chaired by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Shaukat Ali.

Other notable attendees included Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to Ministry of Forests and Climate Change; Professor Dr. SMA Faiaz, Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC); Siddiq Zobair, Senior Secretary of Ministry of Education and UGC Member Professor Dr. Tanzimuddin Khan.
