Police not using lethal weapons to control Gopalganj unrest: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that law enforcement agencies are demonstrating restraint in handling the unrest that broke out during the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally in Gopalganj, and that no lethal weapons are being used to control the situation.

Speaking to BBC Bangla on Wednesday, the IGP said, “We are responding to the situation with patience. Our priority is to bring the situation under control without loss of life. We are reinforcing deployments in the area, but since we are not using lethal force, it is taking some additional time to manage the situation effectively.”

Tensions escalated in Gopalganj from Wednesday afternoon following clashes and vandalism linked to the NCP’s rally. By evening, the situation remained unstable, although law enforcement, including police and military personnel, successfully evacuated NCP leaders and activists from the city under heavy security.

In response to the violence, the district administration imposed Section 144, restricting public gatherings. Additionally, a curfew has been enforced from 8:00 PM on Wednesday until 6:00 PM Thursday to prevent further deterioration of law and order.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement.day until 6:00 PM tomorrow (Thursday) to prevent further escalation.
