Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Mainul Hassan on Sunday said the police will start their activities in full swing in two weeks.
He came up with the remarks at a view-exchange meeting at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) office at Segunbagicha in the capital.
“The traffic system has been restored and all police stations will be fully operational within two weeks. The force will be more active in preventing robbery and other criminal activities,” the DMP chief said, adding that work is underway to boost the morale of the police personnel.

Many police officers, including those accused of murder during the student movement and mass upsurge, have been on the run since the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August.
The United Nations Human Rights Commission and other rights bodies said security forces, including police, used excessive force which resulted in the deaths of around 700 people and injuries to 30,000 others during the movement.

Referring to the loss of properties in arson attacks and vandalism on police establishments, the DMP commissioner said a total of 177 police vehicles were damaged along with infrastructure.
He said police patrol and check-post activities have started in many areas. “The traffic police are now working till late at night and hopefully more progress will be made gradually. They’re also trying to keep the streets clear of illegal parking and footpaths from hawkers as well. A comprehensive drive is underway to recover illegal weapons and arrest criminals… gradually the situation will improve.”
About dealing with murder allegations, Mainul Hassan said police will bring all cases of police murder, arson attacks and looting of police stations under the legal process.
Cases will be filed over all police murders, arson attacks and looting of weapons and other valuables from police stations, he said.

About the cases filed on genocide charges and implicating journalists in the First Information Reports (FIRs), the DMP commissioner said police will not go for indiscriminate arrests. “It’s not obligatory for police to arrest anybody based on an FIR. Any accused person will be arrested subject to a proper investigation,” he assured.
He said a collective investigation will be done and then action will be taken. “Such instructions have been given to all investigation officers,” he added.
CRAB President Kamruzzaman Khan and General Secretary Md Sirajul Islam, among others, were present on the occasion.
