A gang of criminals under the patronage of Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi allegedly attacked the valiant freedom fighters on Monday for supporting the independent candidate of the Narayanganj-1 constituency, Shahjahan Bhuiyan.

Shamsher Ali Khan, an identified criminal, led the attack on freedom fighters while they were campaigning for Shahjahan.

Addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Tuesday, the freedom fighters sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention as the main attacker was not arrested even after 24 hours of the incident.

While reading out a written statement, valiant freedom fighter Chan Miah said about 35 people, including 27 freedom fighters, went to Chhonpara to conduct the election campaign in favour of Shahjahan Bhuiyan.

“Following the order of Golam Dastagir Gazi, the criminals led by terrorist Shamsher attacked the brave children of the Bengali nation with local weapons,” he said.

Shamsher and his men surrounded the freedom fighters and hurled abusive words at them, he said.

They beat up the freedom fighters, including Hasan Masud, Azizul Haque, Sanaullah, and Chan Miah, and others to obstruct the election campaign of Shahjahan, a dedicated leader of the Awami League, according to the freedom fighters.

A case under Section 154 of the code of criminal procedure has been filed with Rupganj police station. But because of MP Gazi, Shamsher has not been arrested yet.

“We want him to be quickly arrested and brought to justice,” the freedom fighter said, requesting immediate action against the criminals and their patron.

At the press conference, freedom fighter MA Salim said Shahjahan Bhuiyan is the son of Rupganj.

“But Golam Dastgir Ghazi is not a child of this area. In the last 15 years, the Awami League government has made great progress, but the Gazi family has built an empire of crimes in Rupganj,” he said.

Shahjahan served as the general secretary of Rupganj upazila unit Awami League and the chairman of upazila parishad for about five years.

“We are campaigning for the experienced soldiers of the boat and the children of Rupganj to end the misrule of Gazi,” added the freedom fighter.

Freedom fighters Sanaullah Mia, Fazlur Karim Mollah, Nazrul Islam, Akhtar Hossain Mollah, Hasan Mahmud, Aktaruzzaman (Babul), Ibrahim Khalil, Abdul Mannan Azad, Abul Faiz Bhuiyan, Nazim Uddin, and Abdul Wahab Mia were also present on the occasion among others.
